Marg Gurr is an artist who works from a small studio at her home in rural Simcoe County. She studied pottery under the supervision of Brenda Hudson prior to completing a BA in Psychology/Fine Arts at Wilfrid Laurier University. Her artistic focus at Laurier concentrated on painting (acrylics) and life drawing, both as artist and model. Her professor and mentor, Michal Manson had a profound influence on both her artistic style and ethical perspective on the arts. They remained friends until Manson's death in February, 2010.
Marg's work in stone began when her partner gave her a small stone carving kit as a gift. It was an immediate and perfect fit. Her works now range from highly representational to abstract conceptual, 2 and 3 dimensional. Embracing an ever-increasing variety of stone combined with her willingness to explore beyond the traditional boundaries of the medium has provided Marg with endless creative opportunities. Each piece is unique and reflects not only her skill as a carver and mixed medium artist, but also her ability to interpret her medium with integrity. She maintains a strong commitment to observing the historical and cultural ethics of her craft while encouraging new artists to contribute to Canada's evolving sculptural identity.
Marg has established herself within an international community of sculptors. She is an enthusiastic advocate of art programs within elementary and secondary curriculums and is an active participant in raising awareness and opportunities for young artists at the community level. She enjoys the occasional speaking engagement and mentoring those new to the craft. Her works are held in numerous private collections and can be seen at local group and solo exhibitions. Marg can also be contacted through her website or at her studio by appointment. |
